Trump is considering an intelligence purge

It is no secret that President Trump has a lot of critics in the form of ex-White House officials who served in various intelligence capacities. From former CIA Director John Brennan to former FBI Director James Comey, there have been a large number of criticisms from such individuals aimed at either the President himself or his Administration.

Well, in response to those perceived attacks, Trump is considering pulling a classic fascist move by removing the security clearances of former Government officials who have been critical of him. In a press conference delivered by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday, July 23, 2018, Sanders revealed that Trump is “exploring the mechanisms” regarding revoking security clearances from said ex-national security experts. In addition to Brennan and Comey, that hit list includes four others: James Clapper, General Michael Hayden, Susan Rice and Andrew McCabe.

If any of those names sound familiar it is because you have more than likely heard them speaking on a news network or talk show about the real problems plaguing the current Administration. And considering most of them, including Clapper, Brennan, and Hayden, have worked under Republican Administrations, they cannot be pigeonholed as Democratic hacks. They are all intelligent persons who have worked in the political sphere long enough to know when someone is acting unprofessional and putting the country at risk.

Of course, for the notoriously thin-skinned Trump, it seems everything must be interpreted as a partisan personal attack. In the conference, Sanders gave the following justification for the proposed action:

“The fact that people with security clearances are making these baseless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence.”

However, it doesn’t look like it will have much of an affect on the morality of the individuals targeted, with some of them offering strong rebukes.

On Twitter, for example, Hayden retorted that it would not “have any effect” on what he says or writes, while a spokesman for McCabe disclosed that he had already lost his security clearance when he left the FBI.

It remains to be seen what other members of the Republican Party will have to say about this purge.
