Republicans are scared of the progressive revolution!
When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic primary in New York’s 14th congressional district, it wasn’t just a message to the Democratic establishment that the popularity of “democratic socialism” and populism were on the rise: it was also a sign to the Republican Party that progressivism is popular, and that the GOP will lose its hold on this country if it does not change its ways.
Well, we all know that is never going to happen, so Republican politicians are employing their tried and true tactic of demonization. In Florida, Representative Ron DeSantis, who has become famous in the past couple of years for shilling for Trump and attacking Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation, spoke about Ocasio-Cortez while campaigning on Monday, July 23, 2018.

Talking to his supporters in Orange Park, DeSantis not only wondered what world she was living in by promoting socialism, but also called her gender into question:
“You look at this girl Ocasio-Cortez or whatever she is, I mean, she’s in a totally different universe. It’s basically socialism wrapped in ignorance.”
“She is, I think, a symptom, you know, of some of the problems that we have of really laying that foundation. She has no clue what she’s talking about. She doesn’t understand the principles of the Constitution. You know, hers is just…spout this talking point or that.”
Ocasio-Cortez, to her credit, gave a classy response on Twitter that highlighted her Puerto Rican ethnicity, and pointed out the strong Puerto Rican demographic growing in Florida that DeSantis is clearly ignorant to:
Rep DeSantis, it seems you’re confused as to “whatever I am.”
I am a Puerto Rican woman. It’s strange you don’t know what that is, given that ~75,000 Puerto Ricans have relocated to Florida in the 10 mos since María.
But I’m sure these new FL voters appreciate your comments! https://t.co/xJlroSe5Hs
